What to expect: Business travelers who know the staff by name sip wine and have their tarot cards read by the fireplace, alongside 40ish couples and European families. With bold stripes and bright colors, vibrant paintings and sculpture, a registration desk shaped like a giant steamer trunk, and a marble staircase, the Monaco provides plenty of eye candy, but never feels overly dramatic. Although it?s located only two blocks from the bustle of Union Square, the hotel maintains an air of comfortable calm. Amenity highlights: Tucked on the bottom floor are a workout room and a petite urban spa that feels like a personal sanctuary. What the spa lacks in size it makes up for in services: There?s a full regimen of massage and facials, a spa, steam room, sauna, and private changing rooms with lockers. Free chair massages are also offered at the nightly wine reception in the lounge off the main lobby. And cancel the kennel: This is one of the city?s rare dog-friendly downtown hotels, with lots of pet-pampering services. Dogs should feel at home in the public areas as well?enormous, fanciful animal sculptures decorate the lobby, hallways, and adjoining restaurant.
